Sorry, I don't know anything about the optimize() problems you mentioned above. However, are you using the packages for Debian Stable (Sarge) (mentioned on the website)? If so then you're actually using 3.4.4's runtime. Andi has said in the past that he has "had little luck" with GCC 4.
