Are you using the latest Xcode tools? They are required for building gcc 4.2.
I'm using what is installed on my Intel Mac OS X laptop.
gcc --version says:

When I start XCode.app and ask it for its version, it says: Xcode 2.3
Xcode IDE: 744.0 Xcode Core: 747.0 ToolSupport: 733.0
