Basically you could use that command, though you would have to extend it such that it reads the starting color from the atoms. As I recall that is possible in pymol. Only question which remains then is whether spectrum truly colors by atom. But that one Warren knows (as he knows how to read the color from an atom, but that's someqhere in the archive too ;) ). Unfortunately I don't think I can find the time to extend mvGradCol myself at this moment :(
