You are probably going to want to slap me for this...
One thing I had forgotten doing was that I actually built pytables pro
with numpy 1.0.1, even though it says it requires 1.0.3. (ubuntu feisty
comes with 1.0.1, so I was cutting corners)
I'm guessing that might be where my problems are coming from -- i had
been hoping that the minor numpy version wouldn't be too critical.
I'll look into re-compiling with numpy 1.0.3 and let you know how I get on.

Hi John, we have indexed a table with 2,147,484,000 (> 2**31) rows with
no problems under 32-bit and 64-bit Python 2.4. Could you please
include a traceback of the error you get with ``createIndex()`` or
