Thanks for your observations.  What you exposed makes sense for a large
user base, but our situation is substantially different since PyTables
covers a niche market and it doesn't have a large user or contributor
base.  Instead, we're a tiny group of developers working in our own
company, spending most of our time on it.  We looked for a business
model which revolved around Free/Open Source Software, and this is the
closest we could get to *in our particular situation*.  You may find a
