Well, PyTables doesn't support variable-length strings in attributes 
yet.

I've filed a ticket (http://www.pytables.org/trac/ticket/167) so that I 
don't forget to try to add support for it (at least for read-only 
mode).  I will try to add this for forthcoming 2.1 release, but I can't 
promise it.
