That should work out quite well. I was watching the Pycon ORM panel (http://blip.tv/file/1949388/), and the author of web2py thinks that non-relational backends are a fair target for an ORM. It already supports GAE, so I imagine there's some infrastructure already in place. Keep in mind that you don't need to go pytables>sql>orm>template>web server, you can simply use pytables objects from your template language (or web server directly, as mentioned earlier in the thread).
