The problem is in NetCDF. With NetCDF 3.6.3, all is fine. With NetCDF 4, it fails. This is true when I use ScientificPython's NetCDF or netcdf-python, two different bindings to NetCDF4. So, this is not on pytables' desk. It appears to be a bug in NetCDF 4.
