python3.2 -m timeit 'x="é"+"x"*10000' 'x[1:]'
100000 loops, best of 3: 2.18 usec per loop
python3.3 -m timeit 'x="é"+"x"*10000' 'x[1:]'
100000 loops, best of 3: 6.68 usec per loop
