Steve, I suggest creating a new issue at bugs.python.org to track your proposal rather than sending diffs to the list. Putting the patch code up on Rietveld is also a good step in helping potential reviewers (I believe there is some info on using Rietveld in the dev FAQ). The patch may still end up being rejected, but I know I at least am lot less opposed to the idea than I was when this thread started.
