Right, I noticed that, too. That's certainly not uncommon. I think it's mostly because of local pride (after all, the road signs are all that many drivers ever see of a city), but sometimes also because it can't be helped when the name gets a different meaning without accents. People just cause too many accidents when they burst out laughing while entering a city by car.
