It is only idiomatic if moderately experienced Python programmers can automatically read it and write it without thinking about what it means. That's not yet the case. Since it is new, not many people know it at all, and those who do often can't use it because they have to use older versions of Python where the syntax is not allowed. I don't recall the discussion over whether to allow dict unpacking literals. Was there a PEP?
