Given the recent events, maybe that's exactly what's going to happen. A
business consortium will take it on themselves to support and enhance
Python2 ad infinitum. I wouldn't be surprised.

In open source, it's up to those with the itch to scratch it.
Someone finally did, and it's called Tauthon.
