The stdlib array module is basically unused in comparison to NumPy. The capabilities of the array module do not meet the needs for most users who want to do anything useful with arrays. The intention in creating NumPy (in the NumPy/SciPy split) was that it might be possible that NumPy could be merged into core Python.
