Disclaimer: I don't know a lot of Rubyists/Pythonistas

I think it depends on the area.

Ruby is very popular because of Rails, there's no default/famous framework
for Python and I think that is one of the reasons Ruby is more popular than
Python on the web.
For "sciencey" stuff (mathematics, modeling, genetics-stuff) I think Python
is more popular.

If anyone else has an opinion, I'd like to hear it :)
