Hi I'm Ed, I'm known to a few of you already so greetings. I quite disappointed that I didn't get to PyCon UK 2008 but a prior engagement with what I'd hoped was going to be some sunshine precluded my attending.
I've been using Python for about 7 years or so now, having moved to it from Java in around 2001 to complete my PhD implementation. I've also used it commercially on a number of projects primarily in the open source / application development space rather than for web work. Although I did recently "dip my toe" into that domain. These applications have used Python for a moderately complex UI , media processing, including video, text translation and intensive numerical computation in single processor and clustered environments. I'm particularly keen on its ability to wrap existing libraries and glue tools together. As an example I've just ported the Python replacement for the scripting engine within the Praat speech analysis software to the Mac. I'm something of Python advocate and prefer it to most other languages but I'm aware of some its darker corners on some platforms. As for meetings I'm based more northish than most so I'm unlikely to get to a meeting in Stockport unless there's a completely compelling reason or I'm in the area anyway.
