After reporting this bug to Autodesk Product Support I received the
following advice

    After you remove the callback, I call:
    selectionCallbackId.disown()

    Please note that the original error message is not causing any
serious damage just more annoying than anything else.

The .disown() method does successfully suppress the error messages.
