Hi there, I am a Visual Effects Artist and I am currently learning python. I have created a few basic tools here and there and to answer your question, I think that personally and also based on comments from some of my co-workers, learning Python as artist I think is the best way to go, I think eventually we can learn how Pymel works however, I do agree with you that we should learn the real api first.
