Yeah. This is a problem with deformers. I haven't found a good way to get 
OpenGL to work in a deformer. In the maya docs the only supported OpenGL nodes 
are locators and surfaces. You can make a locator to do what you want but you 
may have to make a deformer as well that has an output you pipe to a locator. 
If there is a better way to do this I would love to know as I've tried similar 
things and end up doin the locator hack
