Maybe he has been making bitmaps "by hand" using bitmap.image(....)
In which case, I think the answer might be to use PIL's
Image.fromstring() function. Something like (untested):
import Image
im = Image.fromstring('L', (nx, ny), datastring)
im.save("image.jpg")
