I understand that.  For example, I was using PyX to make 
images representing 2D arrays of values.  But now suddenly, 
I need JPEG versions of the same images.  Thus my question.

I had not noticed this.  I'll keep that in mind.  But for 
now the PIL is working fine with the strings I had produced 
for my PyX images, so I've been able to produce good JPEG 
versions of my EPS images.
