I was wrong. It was very easy. Just for the record, here are the steps required to install the Computer Modern afm files on an FC7 system. Other linux/unix systems should be similar: wget -nd http://www.ctan.org/get/fonts/cm/ps-type1/bluesky/cmps-unix.tar.gz tar xzf cmps-unix.tar.gz cd cmpsfont/ sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/texmf/fonts/afm/bluesky/cm sudo cp -av afm/* /usr/share/texmf/fonts/afm/bluesky/cm sudo texhash Thanks to Joerg and Michael for the advice. I would still like to know why txfonts didn't work.
