Yes, PyX is a great tool for high quality vector graphics.

Most people install from SVN, which is trivial.
The last change made to the trunk was two weeks ago:

Get the trunk from SVN.
If you still see a problem, file a bug report.

I'm not a PyX developer,
so I don't know the planned release date,
which might be posted somewhere...
