If you repeat exactly the three steps I listed below, where does the behavior of your version of OpenOffice differ? The spellchecker will highlight the wrong word in red (in the spellchecker window, I mean); does the highlighting include the period?

1) New Writer document, language set to English 2) I type "This text contains a wrong worrd. Testing." 3) I run the spellchecker (F7), it suggests to replace "worrd" with "word", I click "Change" and the period is preserved.
