A ha! It happened again this morning. The trick was that, if I kliked "Change", 
everything went as it should, but if I kliked "Change All" the period 
disappeared. Here is the text:

"...but the logistics and marketing issues
looked formidible. Then I explored..."

If you repeat exactly the three steps I listed below, where does the behavior 
of your version of OpenOffice differ? The spellchecker will highlight the wrong 
word in red (in the spellchecker window, I mean); does the highlighting include 
the period?
