Rebuilding with geos 3.0.4 solved the problem. (I was using 3.1.1.)

No, I have not been able to try it under another OS. I don;t have access
to anything but Slackware 13.0 and 13.1. I went back to revision 13161,

I would expect the problem to be caused by GDAL/OGR or GEOS library.
GSL shouldn't be responsible for that as it is used only for
georeferencing.
Do you know where I can find a list of dependencies so that I can check
against a known working system?
