I think it depends on the student-mentor willingness to do it. If the student is quite enthusiastic and the mentor is actively helping him I think it is not a problem to have another partial position.
Last year, my brother (student) and I (mentor) were in a similar situation for gvSIG and had no big issues with this. At some point it is necessary to elaborate a planning. I think that's the critical point to know if one is able to meet the requirements. Regards.
