Hi,

This is a request for Robert, but some input from others would help out.

Peppered throughout the GUI are buttons with only '...' for opening
the expression editor. A button with only '...' is a bit vague. It
would be nice to have a specific icon for the expression editor to add
to buttons and the ui, where needed.

Any ideas for what it should look like, or characters it should be
based on, like maybe: ('exp') ?

What about the greek 'sum' symbol which is commonly used for this?

Tim

Do you mean upper case sigma Tim [1]?
Sorry yes I meant sigma

We have it already, but probably it's too strongly related to 'sum' or
'statistics'.
What about
- lowercase epsilon [2],
- f()
- integral sign? which in fact is sort of sum :), but looks more
"scientific"

According to some design rules, one should avoid using letters where
possible.
Yes agreed - though I wonder if mathematical symbols are used
universally across locales?

Has there any progress been made concerning this topic?

Sorry for posting again, but I forgot to give some context to the question.

I'm incorporating the expression builder in different places recently.

Pull request #406 uses a QgsExpressionBuilder to alter the selection [1]
My current work on the attribute editor offers to use a QgsExpressionBuilder in different places. It would be nice to have appropriate icons to give the user some hints about what he is going to initiate with a click on that button.

I imagine a combination of this icon together with other icons:
* Expression + Selection (Maybe even different icons with a plus, minus, intersect)
* Expression + Filter
* Expression + Preview (It's about a feature identification string. Maybe ABC or something...)
