I think the reason that Inkscape has it swapped around is so it can create those snap points on the axis. For me I find the QGIS way more user friendly and less clicks. The way we are currently doing it lines up with how programs like Word and Publisher do it so there really is no right way. My main thing would be make it easy for the user to know what to do regardless of the method used.
