Hi Mathieu,
That's cool - I haven't thought about the font markers. I thought they
can only display a single character - but apparently, with data-defined
characters you can also have more than one character and expressions.
Quite powerful!
I tested it with start and end markers and it works fine!
The only drawback is that labels appear up-side-down - something that
the label engine takes care of.

Andreas,
As an useful alternative to labels for short strings (ie a few
characters), you can use the font marker with a data-defined character(s).

Hi,
I wonder if the recently added geometry modifiers could be
introduced also for labeling in a future QGIS release?
Use case:
Label a linear feature multiple times with different label text.
E.g. a label at the beginning of the line, a label somewhere along
the feature, and a different label at the end of the line.
@Matthias: this would be for the waste-water management
application where we need a main label and two minor levels at
certain map scales numbering the pipes/reaches flowing into a
manhole or special structure.
