Andreas,

Given a recent development version of PROJ you should be able to use the 
projection in QGIS. Just add a custom CRS with the setup string 
“+proj=eqearth”. 

For those who don’t want to build PROJ themselves will only have to wait a few 
weeks until PROJ 5.2.0 is released and picked up by the packagers :-)
