Hi Christina I'm sure you gathered this already, but in my opinion, your plugin design and logic regarding the third-party module is precisely as it should be in a QGIS plugin. It's good that you've surfaced an issue on which hopefully the QGIS devs are reaching consensus. Thanks for your patience.
