I think the issues are deeper then the crashes/projection failures fixed by the GDAL/proj cherry-picked commits. The work I did a couple of months back allowing QGIS 3.4 to be built with gdal 3 (https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/30072) was really just a very thin band-aid, designed as a worst case scenario to permit mostly working build to proceed in the case that a distro ONLY has gdal 3 available. From that pr conversation -- a retrospectively (very) naive comment I made relating to this: "The reality is that we won't always be able to dictate the library versions for 3.4. We can for osgeo4w, because we (well, @jef-n) controls that infrastructure, but there's many other platforms where we have no say in this. Including a bunch of wild-west ecosystems where people upgrade stuff just to see what other stuff they can break.... (*cough* homebrew *cough*). We've still got at least 6 months left to support 3.4, so sooner or later we'll need to make it usable on the newer libraries, even if that means a bunch of short-term hacks and workarounds to make it work with this. The only other option is dropping the LTR support early, but I don't think that's possible/a good idea." I've changed my mind since this comment, and now think we SHOULD drop Windows LTR support early rather than releasing a 3.4 build based on proj6/gdal3. Nyall > > Jürgen > > -- > Jürgen E.
