Why not ship with the same grids that come with proj-datumgrid (or what QGIS typically ships in MacOSX and Windows. Then all other full grids need to be downloaded on request. This way, the user experience is no worse than it is currently, and there is the added benefit of being able to download grids when needed quickly. Cheers Jeremy
