What is the SVN syntax for checking the 1.0 preview out, please? I'm not 
too familiar with the QGIS repo.
    

svn co https://svn.osgeo.org/qgis/trunk/qgis your_local_dir
The above is actually for checking out the most recent trunk. As far as I know, to get the actual 'preview1', you need to use:

-$ svn export https://svn.osgeo.org/qgis/tags/Release-1_0_0-preview1
