You can select (right-click in legend) "Save as shapefile..." and the
layer will be saved inr the current project projection (if turned on).
This has not been my experience. "Save as shapefile" saves in the same
projection as the original, not in the project projection.
However the fTools extension with "Define projection" and "Export to New
projection" work nicely. I just make sure to first define the current
projection for the source layer, and after run the export to a new
shapefile in the target projection.
