GRASS rasters were accessed via GDAL (in QGIS < 1.5) but vectors are read directly using GRASS libs. A new GRASS raster driver which reads rasters directly (running specialized QGIS-GRASS module) without GDAL was introduced in QGIS 1.5. Just for clarification.
