I am working with QGIS version 1.4.0 Enceladus on a Mac OS X version
10.5.8
1) I created a .csv file from the .xls file, then loaded the .csv
file into QGIS with the "Add delimited text layer" plugin
2) save the result as a shapefile by clicking on "layers" option
and choosing "save as shape file" and i click on the Irish Grid
reference "ESPG ID 29902".
Then QGIS automatically shuts down.
In order to isolate the problem (Mac OS or the data) would you mind
to supply a subset of your data so we can test on other platforms?
