Thanks Noli.

The approach I took was (following a hint from Alex from "Wild Intellect")
was:

1. to make a new shape file from my yellow polygon, (Layer > Save
Selection as Vector file ...)
2. importing the new layer and placing the "dots" layer above the new
layer, then
3. Vector>Research Tools>Select by location... and follow the GUI
instructions

This did exactly what I needed.

A great tool!

best regards,

Nick

Re: [Qgis-user] Intersection between vector layers

Hi Nick,

I think there are two ways to accomplish this,

1, Select the yelllow polygon using the "Select Features" tool then
Tools > Geoprocessing Tools > Intersect. Create a new shapefile in
"Output Shapefile" and "OK"

or

2. Using the "Select Features" tool again, Press Control button,
select all the points in inside the polygon and then Tools >
Geoprocessing Tools > Clip. Create a new shapefile in "Output
Shapefile" and "OK"
