we seem to be in a Python thing now. Afaik, Python should only matter, when it comes to plugins - startup should not be a python related issue. Donovan, did you enable any plugins? The most easy way to sort out that problem would be to mv /home/donovan/.qgis to /yourpalate. With an empty .qgis folder I'd expect you to be able to start QGIS, cause no fancy plugins will be loaded.
