For the record, in the end I did manage to resolve the problem by
uninstalling QGIS, listing all of the packages installed on the system and
then removing all of those that looked as if they might be connected with
QGIS in any way. I then updated Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 and reinstalled QGIS.

It was a great relief when this worked.
