the French Ministry of Ecology is also interested. A fundamental point is to offer the opportunity to work directly with MapInfo files in QGIS.
To do this would require an evolution of miTab driver.
http://mitab.maptools.org/.

in the meantime, work with postgis (or spatialite) as a pivot format is a good alternative, but can cause problems transcoding of data.

What is your usage scenario ? For "read-only" work, QGIS is - function
wise - a drop-in replacement for MapInfo. For read/write work, you might
consider using a data format, for example Postgis/Postgresql, that can
be edited by both MapInfo and QGIS.

Sponsoring that development within GDAL/OGR is a very good idea.

Maybe the library will be extended to allow editing TAB-files in
future.
It would make things much more easier for me, since I can't really get
rid of TAB-files yet.
We're currently evaluating QGIS as a partial replacement for MI and would
potentially be interested in such sponsorship. Questions I have are the
regular type - how much, how long, who to talk to?
