Hi,
I get the same error if I exort a line geometry with over 3000 vertices
to CSV, and check "Add to canvas". Unchecking it gives no error message,
but the CSV file is empty.

I checked the data and path and they match the criteria you describe. I also
downgraded from 1.8 to 1.7.5 and still got the same error.
Any place I can get more details of the error?
Thanks
How big is the data file? What does it contain? Maybe try with some very simple
data. Create a new point shapefile, with just 2 or 3 columns, and try the "Save
As..." to CSV. If that works, then perhaps it's something in your data.

Each time I try to "Save as.." a vector layer to a CSV file I get an

Works here, on Wheezy, QGIS 1.8. Check your column names for>10
characters, non-ascii characters, etc. Also, be sure that there are no
spaces or non-ascii characters in the whole path to the shapefile.

This worked fine in QGIS 1.7
Any ideas?
