Well, a more direct response: 1. If you have the CSV files make sure they are comma separated and in a decimal degree format (not grades, minutes, seconds or words and letters like "grades" or "W", "E", etc.), you'll need things like "1,90.3425, -100.0000".
2. You click in the "Add CSV layer" icon (in QGIS 1.8 is a big blue icon with commas, in 1.9 is a big comma icon). 3. You upload your CSV file and check the separator box you used and accept, then make sure X and Y correspond with longitude and latitude. 4. This is not a shapefile yet, these are, in ESRI's slang, "events". To save these "events" as shapefiles use right click on layer and "Save As..." 5. I f you need to specify data types I would highly recommend to use "Table Manager" addon. Hope this helps. 2013/8/12 Alexandre Neto <[email protected]> > Hello, > > Could you please give us a bit more information about what do you mean by > working with coordinates? > > All information about how to work with projections in QGIS is in this > section of the user manual: > > > http://docs.qgis.org/1.8/html/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_projections/working_with_projections.html > > To open a CSV file where coordinates columns exist, please look at this > section of the user manual: > > > http://docs.qgis.org/1.8/html/en/docs/user_manual/plugins/plugins_delimited_text.html?highlight=delimited%20text > > > Also, to specify data types of csv columns, take a look to this post by > Anita Graser. > > > http://anitagraser.com/2011/03/07/how-to-specify-data-types-of-csv-columns-for-use-in-qgis/ > > > Hope it helped. > > Alexandre Neto > > On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 2:18 PM, Geovicon <[email protected]> wrote: > >> To whom it may concern**** >> >> ** ** >> >> ** ** >> >> We are struggling to work with co-ordinates in Quantum GIS.**** >> >> ** ** >> >> How do we get the co-ordinates in a form that is acceptable to QGIS ?**** >> >> ** ** >> >> Please send an example of a .csv file and inform us how to import/open it >> in QGIS.**** >> >> ** ** >> >> ** ** >> >> What is the method if only one co-ordinate want to be used ?**** >> >> ** ** >> >> These things are not clear in the manual.**** >> >> ** ** >> >> Thanks**** >> >> ** ** >> >> *Geovicon Environmental (Pty) Ltd* >> >> *Tel: 013 243 0542* >> >> *Fax: 086 632 4936* >> >> ** ** >> >> _______________________________________________ >> Qgis-user mailing list >> [email protected] >> http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user >> >> > > _______________________________________________ > Qgis-user mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user > > -- Saludos, Yasser
