Jonathan -

 * Open the shape file as a layer in QGIS and style this layer.
 * When you haved styled the layer, use the "Layer Properties" ->
"Style" -> "Save Style" button on the layer
 * Choose "QGIS Layer Style File" and create a qml style file.
 * Save the style file to the same directory as your shape file is
placed in - and with the same name prefix (Meaning: If the shape
file is called c:\mydir\myshape.shp the qml file must be named
   c:\mydir\myshape.qml)

From now on, every time you open the shape file as a layer in QGIS , it will be styled according to the style parameters in the qml file.

Hi Lene,
No, it's not the project I want to save (that's akin to a ArcMap mxd file), it is individual layers or layer-groups (akin to a ArcMap lyr file).

Thanks though,
Jonathan

    Hello Jonathan,
Do you think about saving as a project?
When you save the project - it include path, CRS, colour/style,
    label, printcomposer - everything.

    Hi List,
I'm wondering if QGIS can save links to layers as stand alone
files, similar to how ArcMap does it.
I know I can save the style, but I want to save everything about
the layer including data location etc in a file which I can then
share with others. The style only saves the style.

I can't seem to find such a function - is there one?

    Thanks,
    Jonathan
