Hi, 
There are a number of plugin that can make circles.  ArcheoCad, is one of 
them.  If is does not work the way you want, look for an other under CAD 
like plugins.  You can also create a 50k buffer around points.   
Once you have the circle, save the layer and right click on the circle, and you 
will get the area.  If you want, you can create a field called 'area' in 
the layer with circles and you can generate the area using the Qgis  field 
calculator using and expression.
