Hi If you have points/locations you can create bufferzones http://docs.qgis.org/2.2/en/docs/gentle_gis_introduction/vector_spatial_analysis_buffers.html If you want to calculate use the fiels calculator. In this example change the function from Length to Area http://docs.qgis.org/2.2/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_vector/field_calculator.html

You can also create a 50k buffer around points. Once you have the circle, save the layer and right click on the circle, and you will get the area.
