Ian,
You could try to limit the max amount of ram available for each VM, this would have been done when each, was created, you should probably start there! Its under Settings, System, Motherboard and Base Memory, I would say reduce it so as each VM has equal Memory and you leave a bit for the host.

I know that sounds like something you wouldn't want to do but we have a number of users sharing a VM and if the first QGis started manages to grab all (or even most) of the available memory it prevents the other users from being able to start QGis let alone use it.
