I dont think you are doing anything wrong. I tried to install refFunctions to but it seems as the refFunctions plugin is broken. Maybe its not updated for the latest QGIS versions. I tried to find this Pluginbuilders ,Enrico Ferreguti, email-address, to report this problem to him, but cant find it.
