Hi! Thats correct, it went away after I uninstalled the QGIS2Compat plugin for me too!

I dont think you are doing anything wrong. I tried to install refFunctions to but it seems as the refFunctions plugin is broken. Maybe its not updated for the latest QGIS versions.
